Batik Silk Scarf

The elegant form of the royal Thai orchid emerges in the swift movements of this hand-crafted shawl. An empowered purple hue adorns the natural background, creating a contrast of eternal allure. Complemented by the presence of delicate leaves, this accessory infuses any wardrobe with Southeast Asian charm.
Thanyarat Sananpanich executes the shawl in 100% silk using traditional techniques of batik dyeing. First she stretches the cloth on a wooden frame in order to sketch out the design in pencil. A protective mixture of melted wax and resin is then applied to portions of the surface before the cloth is crumpled and dipped in the dye solution, as the areas that remain exposed absorb the reactive color. During this process the wax cracks, creating an attractive and subtle network of fine lines. Finally the wax is removed and these steps are repeated for each successive color.
Care instructions: Dry-cleaning is preferable. If hand-washed, use only the mildest soap in cold water, never use a washing machine. Hang to dry in the shade and do not leave crumpled or creased while wet. Always spray with water until thoroughly damp before ironing on the underside.
